The victim in this case is a 26-year-old woman who was sexually abused as a child. Joseph King, the defendant in this case, was a close friend of the victim’s family. Joseph King, who is thirteen years older than the plaintiff, began to sexually abuse the victim when she was 12 years old. The sexual assaults continued over the course of four years.

At trial, a licensed clinical social worker explained the extent and nature of the abuse suffered by the young girl. The jury was told about how the defendant groomed the victim and her family, as well as the devastating lifelong effects the abuse will have on the victim, who is now an adult.

The jury verdict, which was rendered in New York State Supreme Court on May 1, 2023, before Justice Daniel J. Furlong, was comprised of $30 million for past damages, $20 million for future damages, and $50 million for punitive damages.

Attorney Robert Corp, who is a Junior Partner with Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria, represents numerous victims of sexual abuse.  Following the jury verdict, Mr. Corp stated “No amount of money will ever be able to give my client back what was taken from her by the despicable acts of this child molester.  Through this verdict, the jury performed a great service by vindicating what my client lived through, respecting her dignity, and providing her with some semblance of peace and solace.

Mr. Corp explained that the verdict “is a powerful message to child molesters that if you abuse a child here, in Erie County, we will see to it that you are severely punished for those crimes.
