Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria is pleased to announce that attorney Ryan C. Johnsen secured a $1.65 million jury verdict on behalf of a Western New York woman who suffered injuries as the result of medical malpractice during thyroid surgery.
Following a seven-day trial in New York State Supreme Court, the jury found in favor of Ryan C. Johnsen’s client, awarding $1.65 million in compensation for the injuries she sustained.
Medical Malpractice Case Involved Unnecessary Thyroid Surgery
The client in this matter, a woman in her 50s and the mother of three children, was diagnosed with a benign mass on the right lobe of her thyroid. She sought treatment from an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat surgeon specializing in head and neck surgery).
The surgeon recommended that she undergo a thyroidectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove part or all of the thyroid gland.
However, expert medical witnesses testified during trial that surgery was not the appropriate course of treatment for her condition. According to evidence presented by attorney Ryan Johnsen, the benign thyroid mass could have been managed without an invasive thyroidectomy.
Surgical Errors Led to Permanent Injury
Evidence presented during trial also established that the surgeon committed surgical malpractice during the thyroidectomy.
Expert testimony showed that during the operation:
- All of the patient’s parathyroid glands were damaged.
- The blood supply to the thyroid gland was compromised.
- These surgical errors resulted in permanent and preventable injuries.
Attorney Ryan Johnsen brought a medical malpractice lawsuit against the head and neck surgeon as well as the surgeon’s medical practice, arguing that the client suffered harm both because the surgery was unnecessary and because it was performed negligently.
Jury Awards $1.65 Million After Seven-Day Trial
After hearing testimony from medical experts and evidence presented by Ryan Johnsen, the jury rendered a verdict, awarding the victim $1.65 million in damages.
“This verdict reflects the importance of holding healthcare providers accountable when patients are harmed by preventable medical errors,” said attorney Ryan Johnsen. He continued by stating, “we are grateful that the jury carefully considered the evidence and delivered justice for our client.”
